What an emcee. I’m gonna put the a-side aside for a second. On The Mic is one of the hottest songs I’ve ever heard. Over an ILL beat produced by “Cash-Us- Clay” Mack, Breez and fellow Stronghold members C-Rayz Walz and Poison Pen interpolate B-Boy Document 99 with spit sounds in the background. Three of the tightest verses I’ve heard in my life make it difficult to even quote lines, but I promise you won’t be disappointed in anything that happens. Jesus, this is a brilliant song. Refined, the a-side, is probably the worst song I’ve ever heard in my life. The beat, produced by Ka-Per Patterson, and the ‘rugged’ distortion make the subpar lyrics inaudible, which is actually probably doing us a favor. What a waste of an amazing emcee. I’m giving this a 2.5 because one half of it is PERFECT, and one half gets exactly a zero. I’d suggest picking this up because one half is just SO good…but put away all knives, pills, and suffocation devices before you play the a-side. The cover art, done by Breez himself, ranks among the best 12″ covers i’ve seen. [HeadLine]
